filicudi porto, isola di filicudiFilicudi, a 9.5 km2 island, was called Phoenicodes in ancient times because of the large number of ferns. There are around 250 residents.

This small isle is characterised by steep slopes and rocky coasts and by the presence of a group of craters, among which the tallest one is the Fossa delle Felci (773 m).

scavi archeologici, isola di filicudi There are two small piers, Filicudi Porto and Pecorini mare.  The last one at the moment cannot be used by hydrofoils and ships.

You thus generally get to Filicudi Porto, located in a beautiful small bay where you can admire on the left (for those coming from the sea) Capo Graziano, a natural fortress with the relics of a  prehistoric village.
The area of the excavations is fenced and in order to visit it you need to address to a watchman.

The hut stone basements and the precious ceramics found here, and today exhibited at the archaeological museum of Lipari, demonstrate the importance of the island since the Bronze Age.

grotta bue marino, isola di filicudiThe beaches of this island are not made of sand but of big round pebbles. The most famous one is Le Punte, and is located at walking distance from the pier.

Otherwise, we suggest you to go to Pecorini mare or the port beach.
By boat, you should not miss the large Grotta del Bue Marino (Sea Ox Cave) which is 30 meters large. It was called like this by the old fishermen maybe because the monk seal used to take refuge here.

With the passing of time, the sea created a delightful little beach at the bottom of the cave and by boat you can enter the cave and see it.

Not far from the Sea Ox Cave there is a huge crag of volcanic origin called La Canna (The Cane) because of its shape.
