Even though the last eruption occurred in 1890, the volcano never stopped proving vital and some phenomena are still visible: fumaroles, steam output both on top of the crater and beneath the sea and the appreciated therapeutic sulphur mud.
The isthmus that connects the Isle of Vulcano to the smaller isle of Vulcanello creates the two bays of “Porto Levante” (East port) and “Porto Ponente” (West port).
Porto Levante is the main destination of tourists due to the hot waters generated by submarine hydrothermal activity. Porto Ponente is also very much appreciated by visitors because of its very fine black sand and the beach resorts very close to the sea.
The mud pool in the area of Porto Levante is one of the main characteristics of the isle and attracts every year thousands of visitors thanks to its therapeutic properties.
On the other side of the island there is the solitary Gelso beach (Mulberry beach) that can be reached both by land and by sea.
This beautiful beach is also famous for its typical small restaurants.
A typical attraction of the island is the climb to get on top of the crater: it lasts one hour and, once on the top, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of all the 7 Aeolian Islands.
The most important urban areas of the island are “Vulcano porto” and “Vulcano Piano” which is located at a distance of 7 kms from the port. Vulcano piano lays on a hill and tourists can find here a surprisingly flowery landscape.
